June 8th 2024

The Cheese Cup is our annual warm water fly fishing tournament that raises money for suicide prevention in Northern Michigan.

Tournament Rules

Teams can pursue the largest fish in a given category (bluegill, bass, carp, pike) and compete for the Grand Slam (any three species) or Super Slam (all four species). There will be a optional team meeting the morning of the tournament and anglers can begin fishing at 6:30am. No fish will be scored after the 4pm cutoff. Head back after fishing and enjoy food and drinks before the awards ceremony!

Teams will consist of 1-2 anglers.

1. This is a catch & release tournament.

2. All fish must be taken on fly.

3. Fish wherever you like, as long as you have legal access to the water.

4. Wading, Kayaks, and Boats are all acceptable methods to access water and fish.

5. Fish to be scored will be photographed with the tournament totem (see notes) and an approved measurement device.

6. Photographs without the approved measurement tool & totem twill not be scored.

Size is key in this event, to win a category your team will need to have caught the largest fish.

The Grand Slam and Super Slam is where the real fun is! To compete for the Grand Slam your team will need to catch three of the four species. For the Super Slam your team will need to catch all four species. The largest fish of each species will be scored and the total length of your fish will be your points total. Highest points total wins.

10” bluegill, 18” bass, 25” pike, 23” carp

Total length = 76  Team Total = 76

Typically, we would have an official tournament ruler but as this is a socially distanced event and we have opened things up to the entire state...we have to improvise. Registered teams & individuals will receive instructions to grab a unique item from their homes to be included in their fish photographs. This will help us ensure all photos are from the day of the tournament.

All fish measurements will berounded downto the nearest inch. Just like real life, a 10.87 inch fish is not an 11 inch fish. Exact measurements will be used in the event of a tie.

Simple, it does not count. No exceptions. Get over it, keep fishing.

Teams will mostly be competing for bragging rights. Remember the point of this tournament is to have fun and help raise money for suicide prevention. Most prizes will be drawn for at random during the awards ceremony.
