5 Things I've Learned Fishing Saltwater - Spooled Episode #25

Embarking on a saltwater fishing journey can be both exhilarating and challenging. In this episode, we'll delve into five things I've learned from my recent experiences as a new saltwater angler including one bonus tip at the end.

  1. Accuracy Trumps Distance: The first lesson I learned is the importance of casting accuracy over sheer distance. While many of us love to practice casting as far as possible, guides often appreciate precise casts within a comfortable range. I know for sure I'll be spending more time working on my accuracy before my next trip. It can make an enormous difference between a tough day on the water and a great one.

  2. Build a Strong Relationship with Your Guide: Building a rapport with your fishing guide is crucial for a successful trip. The faster you can get on the same page as your guide, the faster you will find success in the salt. Really you're trying work together as a team. Good communication is the foundation for this so it's vital to get to know your guide so you can help them help you.

  3. Understanding Fly Weights: One of my favorite things about saltwater fishing is the fly patterns. The most successful flies are often very simple. Once you find a pattern that works well, its a great idea to carry it in several different weight options. Doing this will allow you to fish your favorite flies in several different situations.

  4. Measure Success in Opportunities: Success in saltwater fishing is should not only be determined by your catch numbers. There will be difficult days and awesome days during a trip. You cannot expect every day to be a banner day. As a new saltwater angler I've had days that were truly humbling. Through those days I've learned to value opportunities and seize the educational opportunities they provide.

  5. Dealing with Downtime: Staying in the zone can be tough for me. Long stints on the bow scanning the water is a big part of this sport and you need to be ready at a moment's notice. Lately, I've started to rely on a mantra to help me stay focused and ready to capitalize on every opportunity.

Saltwater fishing offers not only the thrill of the catch but also a plethora of lessons that extend beyond the rod and reel. By prioritizing accuracy, building strong relationships with guides, understanding fly weights, measuring success in opportunities, and managing downtime effectively, anglers can enhance their skills and enjoyment on the water.
