Bear's Strip Fry Tutorial
In this fly tying tutorial, we take a look at Bear's Strip Fry. A great fly for spring steelhead, this fly imitates vulnerable immature salmon. With just a few materials, you can tie these up and be ready for your next steelhead trip!
MATERIALS
- Hook: TMC 3761 #4-6
- Thread: UNI 6/0 (White)
- Eyes: Bead Chain Eyes (Small)
- Tail: Grizzly Marabou (Natural)
- Wing: Zonker Rabbit Strip (White)
- Body: Ice Dub (Pearl)
- Collar: Mallard or Teal Flank (Natural)
- Egg Sac: Ice Dub (Hot Orange)
NOTES
There are times in the spring when steelhead focus in on vulnerable salmon fry and eagerly chase them into the shallows. Fish this fly with a dead drift presentation but finish each drift with a swing and even a few short strips. There isn't much need to tie variations of this fly - instead, tie up a pile so you can fish them near the wood where fish like to rest.
