Northern Michigan Fishing Report – Steelhead, Bass & Trout Conditions | May 15, 2026
After a long start to spring-like weather, dare I say it finally seems like some warmer and more stable temperatures are finally in the forecast. The rivers are still running a bit high, but everything is fishable and wadable for this week. We have been out on the water this week and starting to witness a shift in the fishing. It is still a grind most days, but there is definitely that sense of things finally starting to cut loose and open up to some more consistent fishing on the Manistee River, Boardman-Ottaway River, Platte River and all of the smaller creeks and tributaries. Lakes are starting to be more productive and it feels like we can finally turn off the furnace during the day! My hummingbirds finally showed up this week and all the flowering trees are in bloom. Welcome spring! We have been waiting way too long…

Manistee River Report
The Manistee River is fishable in all sections. Below Tippy Dam the boat launch is still a struggle if you are launching a boat, it is day to day. Highbridge Road remains closed from the north side, but you can access the boat launch from the south side. Steelhead are done, but there is some trout fishing and pre-spawn bass opportunities to be pursued.

Upper Manistee River Report
All sections are open and fishable on the Upper Manistee and we have been finding success on smaller streamers, swinging soft hackles and the fish are starting to look up at the remaining Hendricksons. There is a mix of bugs on the Upper Manistee with sulphurs starting, stoneflies, caddis and BWO’s on cloudy days. Be cautious wading as things shifted in some places with the flooding from spring. There have been some big fish still cruising around on the sand during the day and focus on covering water for best success.

Platte River
Our shop staff has been fishing the Platte quite a bit lately and reports all point to some good fishing for trout. Small streamers have been the ticket. This river is close and convenient to fish from Traverse City’s west side and there are no bridge or access closures on this stream. Easy to wade and perfect to catch some live music and a beer at Lake Ann Brewery after you fish!
Boardman Ottaway River
The Boardman Ottaway River is in great shape, but some of the access is still very limited with bridge closures. There are still roundabout ways to hit the quiet area and it is fishing well. We have yet to float some of the sections but have waded in with success. There are confirmed trees down between Brown Bridge and Shumky access points requiring portage. Several bridges are lower than normal as well. You’ll find that the water is fairly clear but lots of sand and sediment is moving through the system still. Fishing with streamers and nymphs are the most productive methods on this river.
