The Northern Angler is excited to offer our first Spey instruction clinic during the summer of 2025!
Spey casting is one of the fastest-growing styles under the fly fishing umbrella. It's a traditional, time-tested approach that allows anglers to cover water efficiently and comfortably. Your coach, Marco Ross, has extensive experience as a casting instructor in the West and has taught alongside renowned figures such as Simon Gawesworth, Justin Spence, and Matt Klara.
The focus of this course will be to enhance each student's understanding of casting, approaches to fishing with a fly, and the nuances that make you an effective Spey angler. The clinic will cover strategies for both trout and steelhead, teaching you how to effectively fish the fly to increase your catch rates.
The course will take place from 9 AM to 5 PM on the Lower Manistee River. We will begin with an introduction to general knowledge and terminology in the sport of two-handed casting. This will be followed by demonstrations and one-on-one instruction. We will also provide both Skagit and Scandi style setups for students to try.
We'll break for lunch around midday, allowing for a great opportunity to discuss any questions you may have from the morning session and the technical strategies for pursuing Great Lakes steelhead and trout.
In the afternoon, we will continue with casting instruction and focus on increasing distance. We will also shift our attention to actual fishing applications and different strategies for approaching varying water types. Finally, we will conclude with techniques on setting the hook and how to fight fish quickly and efficiently so they can return safely to the water.
This clinic is suitable for everyone, from first-time Spey casters to advanced anglers.
