Fishing Report 6/5/24

June 4, 2024 Northern Angler Fishing Report

If there is a fast forward button for the weather this sping/early summer, someone please hit pause!  Things are ramping up really quickly in the hatch department.  We are seeing Isos, brown drakes and the fish are looking up!  Cooler weather and some rains this week might help slow things down just a bit, but we are well ahead of schedule in the hatch department on all of our local rivers.  Hex will be early this year, but I think it will be a more steady and expanded season with lower water with the lack of snowpack over the past couple of winters and more exposed mud banks.  Time will tell.

This Saturday,  June 8 we are hosting our annual Cheese Cup!  Be sure to get signed up as this is always a great event to support Suicide Prevention and Awareness programs for our local Child and Family Services Center.  We do this in honor of our good friend Alex Hawke that lost his battle to depression in 2017.  This is our eighth year to host the event and with your support and the support of our sponsors we have raised over $70,000.  If you would like to make a donation, you can now do so online here. We're happy to also accept checks. Please make checks payable to Child and Family Services and in the memo please put “Cheese Cup.”

We will be hosting the  “after party” at Earthen Ales, so stop by from 3:30 pm on!  Ben Hunting will be on hand with Sage and Redington Rods to cast and we will have lawn games going and beer flowing!  There is a food truck available for some incredible grub.

Manistee River Report

Upper Manistee River Trout Report- Fish are looking up and it has been some of the best and fun fishing I have seen in recent years.  Not every day is like that and we have definitely witnessed some pretty slow days, but the clouds and rain have kicked off the Isonychias in full force and we are seeing some decent fish looking up.  Brown drakes have been dancing around and I would say hex are right around the corner.  There are bugs coming off the local lakes and it will not be long.  Dry fly fishing has been good-it is time to get out and fish!

Boardman River ReportThe Boardman/Ottaway River is up and stained with the recent rains making for some great streamer fishing!  Dry fly action has been pretty decent in the evenings and caddis are continuing to pop around.  Certain areas will have isos and drakes, so be prepared!  Get out and explore some different sections of the river this summer.  It is such a great resource, so close to town.

Local Lakes Report

Bass seem to be off the beds and heading into the post spawn mode on most lakes and the bluegill are hitting the beds and shallows.  I am busting out the old Shakespeare Wonder Rod and hitting some of my favorite bluegill haunts in the evenings.  Get your rubber spiders out and go have some fun on your local lakes!  We have a great selection of bass poppers and foam for your warmwater pleasure!!
