Fishing Report 5/11/19

Weather hasn't exactly been what we all hoped for this past week with some heavy downpours and gusty winds out of the North. We have seen a few glimpses of warmer weather with the sun peaking through but don't expect the next week to be much better. Pack your rain gear and dress warm!

Like the weather, fishing has kept us on our toes and forced us to stay flexible. Both days I spent on the Upper Manistee this week the streamer action was good but the Hendrickson hatch was still fairly short. Black Caddis was consistent throughout the afternoon but the fish only seemed to care once the Hendricksons got started. Unfortunately, this rain and cold nights has actually dropped the water temperature by several degrees and stalled some of the dry fly fishing. If you are willing, fishing nymphs and soft hackles will still be productive while you wait to see if there will be surface action.

The Boardman is rocking with this recent rain so please use caution wading if you plan to be out. Streamers have been the best bet for the Boardman as it rarely cooperates with anglers looking for early season hatches.

FLIES TO HAVE THIS WEEK

  • Nymphs: Prince Nymph, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Copper John
  • Soft Hackles: Peacock & Partridge, Pheasant Tail
  • Dry Flies: Black Caddis(16-18), Hendrickson Emergers, Duns, and Spinners(10-14), Klinkhammer Adams
  • Streamers: Sculpzillas, Sex Dungeons, & Circus Peanuts were all catching fish on the upper man. Almost every color was working at some point so have a variety.
