Fishing Report 12/6/24

Northern Michigan Fishing Report

December 6, 2024

Overview:

As we head into the depths of December, the fishing scene in the Traverse City area remains active for steelhead and trout enthusiasts. With the colder temperatures setting in, the fish are moving into deeper, slower waters, making for some excellent late-season opportunities. The area's rivers, including the Boardman, Betsie, Platte, Elk, and the nearby Manistee, continue to offer productive fishing conditions for anglers targeting steelhead and brown trout.

Steelhead Fishing:

Steelhead fishing remains the focal point for many anglers this month. Fish are spread throughout the rivers. Cooler water temps have slowed the fish a bit, but steady action can still be had, especially during the warmest parts of the day.

Current Conditions:

  • Water Temps: Ranging from 35°F to 40°F, depending on the river system and time of day.
  • Water Levels: Most rivers are still low and running clear.
  • Best Time to Fish: There shouldn't be a big rush to get on the water early. We've been hitting the water after sunrise with a big thermos of coffee.

Techniques:

  • Float Fishing: Anglers have been finding success running beads and jigs. A good combination of pink, orange, and chartreuse beads has been very effective.
  • Fly Fishing: Egg patterns and Nymphs have been productive but we've seen fantastic streamer and swing fly action this fall. Indicator rigs, chuck & duck, and spey have all been working.

Trout Fishing:

Brown trout and brook trout are still active in the area rivers and streams. As water temperatures drop, these fish are moving into slower, deeper pools, where they are less active but still willing to chase into current.

Current Conditions:

  • Water Temps: Same as steelhead, ranging from 35°F to 40°F.
  • Water Clarity: Super clear!
  • Best Time to Fish: Mid day. Fishing tends to be best in the slower, deeper pools where trout are holding up. A slow retrieve and more natural presentations are key.

Techniques:

Tips for Success:

  • Dress for the Weather: Winter conditions can change quickly, so be prepared with proper gear, layers, and waterproof clothing.
  • Check River Levels: Conditions can change daily, so it’s always a good idea to check river gauges for real-time updates.
  • Stealth is Key: As the water clears up and fish become more wary, make sure to approach fishing holes quietly and avoid spooking fish.

Forecast:

Looking ahead, the steelhead bite will likely continue through the month, with opportunities peaking during warm-up periods. Trout fishing will also remain steady, especially in the slower, deeper pools where fish are holding up for the winter. With a forecasted mix of cold temperatures and occasional snow, the bite could become more challenging as fish settle into their winter patterns, but steady, quiet presentations will continue to yield results.

Good luck on the water, and remember to follow all local regulations. Tight lines!
