Northern Michigan Steelhead Fishing Report
November 30th, 2024
Despite the cool down, the steelhead run is in full swing across Northern Michigan and anglers are finding success on many of the region's rivers. Here’s what you need to know:
River Conditions
- Boardman River: Flows are moderate with clear water conditions. Steelhead are holding downtown in the deeper holes below the Union Street Dam. Trout fishing can be difficult this time of year but target slower water with structure if you're heading out. *Remember trout water is closed above Beitner Bridge.
- Manistee River: The Big Manistee below Tippy Dam is having a fantastic fall! We're seeing good numbers of fresh steelhead willing to chase a swung fly despite the low & clear water. Look for things to slow down some and fish to start targeting nymphs in this cooler weather.
- Betsie River: Anglers are reporting decent fishing this month. Look for steelhead to slow their movement with the cooler weather. Target depth near log jams and seams. Be methodical and put plenty of drifts through good looking water.
- Platte River: Lower water levels have concentrated fish in deeper runs. A stealthy approach is key here! *Remember the Platte has specific regulations and closes above Platte Lake January 1.
Fly Patterns & Baits
- Fly Anglers: Egg patterns (oranges, pinks, yellows, and chartreuse) and nymphs like stoneflies, caddis and hex have been productive. Swinging streamers such as sculpins and leeches is also working well, especially in higher water.
Tips for Success
- Bring multiple rod setups to adapt to conditions.
- Fish the warmest part of the day (often mid-day to late)
- Polarized sunglasses can help spot fish and structure.
Additional Notes
The weather has been cooperative, but it's now officially winter here in Northern Michigan. Keep your expectations lower and your days shorter but you should still be out on the water.
Good luck, and tight lines!
