Well, to be honest, fishing has been pretty slow overall the past week. Being thrust into winter early has never really helped our Steelhead fishing. Rumor is that lake temperatures may now exceed where the rivers are. The rain we are getting today and the melt that will come with the higher predicted weekend temperatures will not help the temperature situation in more Northern rivers. Wow, how quickly the seasons have changed in Northern Michigan! If you feel like I do about it things are not going to get much better in the next week. Cold, Ice, Winter -

It's cold out folks, seriously cold. We're not here to sugar coat things for you so I'll tell you right away that none of our guides, staff, or friends have been out fishing the rivers lately. We've gotten numerous reports lately that both The Betsie and Upper Manistee have frozen over in sections, seriously limiting options if you've got a itch to get out there.

Between breaking ice out of the guides and untangling our lines, we saw a few fish and stuck one. Water temps are cool so presentations need to be slower. It's definitely a departure from the high speed retrieves we all enjoy but it works. Drop em, strip em, stall em, jig em and hang on; that's the program.

After two days of rain and warmer temps it looks like Northern Michigan will return to a more typical winter weather pattern. Motivated anglers are still making their way to the rivers and enjoying time on the water alone.
