Fishing Report 10/6/18

SALMON/STEELHEAD

We're starting to see Chrome Steelhead mixed in with Kings and Coho in Northern Michigan rivers! There are of course plenty of salmon left to be fished to so get out there with your ten weight and hang on. Kings are taking the standard fare (egg sucking leeches, caddis nymphs, stonefly nymphs, and eggs) on dead-drift presentations. Coho are still active and offer something a little different to anglers as they are willing to chase flies presented in a more active fashion (swing and strip). Just a quick note, if you find a pile of salmon in the river and they're not eating you might be doing everything right. Remember that these fish enter the river to reproduce, not because there they really like caddis, stoneflies, and etc. So remember, some fish are going to ignore what you're throwing. Keep at it, find more fish, and don't take it too seriously. Steelhead are going to be taking eggs so get cranking on yarn balls and get your beads organized because with the rain we have foretasted for the next week they're on the way.

TROUT

Streamer junkies rejoice, fall is officially here and the road to "browntown" is open. If you're not into the whole sink-tip game, be on the lookout for Blue Winged Olives and October Caddis. Your best bet will be fishing nymphs, soft-hackles, and emergers rather than hoping for a rising fish. That being said if we get another few days of warm weather fish may still be willing to eat ants, beetles, and the occasional hopper off the surface.

If you want to get set up for streamer fishing our Northern Michigan rivers stop in the shop and we'll get you all set up. We have a great selection of rods, reels, sink-tips and flies for you to chase the big one.
