I think we can say Fall is in full swing here in the Mitten……with a touch of the white stuff around it feels like things are right on track as far as weather goes! I’m sure we will see some more mild days and the occasional big orange globe in the sky from time to time, but it’s time to shift ourselves into pre-Winter mode and expect the weather to not be favorable from here on out! The Lower Manistee is finally dropping and clearing up from the inches of rain we just got dumped on us; and with it brought a good number of fish into the system which by now should be scattered around, giving us many river miles to go chase them in with multiple tactics! With the colder weather the river temps have dropped significantly, shifting things a bit and should get fish responding better to the swung fly and indicator fishing should gain some momentum as the week progresses and temps get a little more stable. There is lots of great Fall/Early Winter fishing to be had so come see us up North and get in on the Steelhead fun!
In the upper reaches of the Manistee River, fish have been spawning heavy in the flood and should continue for the next week sporadically here and there, but look for the post-spawn bite to gain some momentum over the next couple weeks if temps stay stable and consistent long enough for drop back fishing to be decent. Late Fall is a great time to get away from crowds on the lower river and chase some big browns around on the streamer if you are willing to put in the time for a shot or two at some trophy fish! They need to put on weight for the upcoming Winter and if you can time it right and be flexible there are plenty of decent days left for the chase!
Inland lakes are another option if you want to get away from crowds and chase some big bass or pike around. They hit the shallows hard feeding heavy this time of year before the temps crash and it is a great way to get some trophy fish that have little to no fishing pressure. There is always something to do in late Fall, you just have to think outside the box a little and off the beaten path and you can find some of the best fishing of the year! If you are interested in doing some different things, or just looking to get into some Fall Steelhead……give us a shout, we have plenty of dates available and great fishing to be had before the big freeze!
See ya out there,
