Welcome to the “Dog Days of Summer” here in Northern Michigan; bringing sunny skies, hot temps, and some fun fishing opportunities to boot! Trout fishing this time of year is all about “Da Hoppa” as our hatches slow down to a crawl, but we get to brake out the funky foam creations and twitch around bugs. Such fun takes and explosive smacks on the fly; whats not to love about unsinkable, visual flies that are irresistible to trout! Tricos are making their presence known as well in the wee hours of the morning, bringing up lots of native brook trout and small brown trout if you are into micro flies and 7x tippet; which can be a blast on light gear for anglers willing to strain their eyes looking at miniature posts.
If you are looking to catch a trophy brown this time of year, it’s all about the after party when the lights go out……the big boys come to play! Mousing and froggin at night is more advanced fishing, but can be worth the charge of admission because their is nothing like the sound of a cannon ball explosion on your fly in the dark of night! If you have not yet had the chance to experience this kind of fishing……you are definitely missing out! Word to the wise……this is not for beginners as the lights are out and big flies with big hooks are slung around and precise casting is a must, so put some thought into it if you are looking to give it a try as it can be dangerous!
One of my favorite times of the year is smallmouth bass and pike in the river! This is the most visual fishing from a streamer standpoint their is. Running floating and intermediate lines with streamers and poppers for the smallmouth, and light sink tips with wire leaders for the pike. Seeing fish come charging out of log jams from 30 yards away in low clear water slashing and killing our bait or exploding on our poppers……..what’s not to love about that! I can’t get enough of it……and it has been fishing pretty good as of late. So if you are looking for something to do during the dog days of summer…..we have plenty of fishing opportunities for all ages and levels of experience. Give us a shout or stop in the shop and have a cup and a chat as we are happy to get you dialed in on the fish!
See ya out there,
