Trout Opener is this Saturday and the weather the past two weeks or so has been mild. We are seeing bugs on the upper sections of area rivers. The Ausable and Manistee have been producing some fish on Early Black Stones, BWO’s, Caddis and Hendricksons. Water temps are in the upper 40’s to mid 50’s. THINK TROUT!! Fishing nymphs and soft hackles in the afternoons has been productive, look for bugs to get going anywhere from 3pm to 6ish, depending on water temperatures. Water is coming down and clearing nicely, should be in great shape for the weekend if we do not get too much rain late in the week.
Streamer fishing trout has been picking up with the warmer temps and we are seeing more and more fish coming to the fly.
There are still steelhead in the Big Manistee below Tippy dam with a mix of fresh fish and drop backs. Some days are better than others, nuke eggs, stonefly nymphs, and salmon fry have been the best producers lately. It will be interesting to see how long the fish stick around this spring, water temps are already in the mid 50’s so the fish run up, spawn quickly and drop back to the lake. A few fish remain in the Betsie and I would look for fish to trickle in during the next week or so and then it will be done for the spring.
Have a great Opening Weekend! Get out and fish.
