We are finally seeing some rain and favorable winds to make it feel a bit more like fall. Although it’s been unseasonably warm, the big fish are showing up in good numbers in local rivers. We need some cooler nights and days to bring the water temps down a bit to really help the fishing.
Look for this to be the last push of fish in the Betsie. Fresh kings are making their way up and hitting the gravel and there have been reports of steelhead being caught off the pier at Frankfort. Work the holes, slots and pockets behind polished gravel for staging fish and agressive males. You might be surprised by some fresh chrome! The fish have been big this year on the Betsie and it seems to have a healthy run of fish. If you are looking for Salmon, get to the Betsie sooner rather than later.
The Big Manistee below Tippy dam has been good, but still a bit too warm. Cast streamers for browns, steelhead, cohos and fresh kings. There are still a big number of adult fish staging in Lake Michigan from the Charter Boat reports. Winds and rain with some cooler weather will really get things rocking on the Manistee. Fish are starting to hit the gravel this week and we have been seeing a good number of skippers, cohos and a few adult steelhead in the river. It really should materialize to be a much better fall than last year, judging by the number of kings in the river now and looking at the number of Salmon at the Little Manistee weir. The Big Manistee is just hitting it’s stride and it should improve daily over the next month to six weeks.
Streamer fishing for browns has been good on the Manistee and AuSable on the sections that remain open year round. Dry fly action has still been good on the warm days with attractor patterns such as patriots, flying ants, rubber legged dries. Enjoy the peace and solitude with the leaves changing these rivers offer the fly anglers. Trout fishing is a great way to spend some time before or after a bird hunt.
Our guides still have some limited number of late October dates available, and some early November days open as well. Give the shop a call at 231-933-4730 and book a guide trip for some fall fun.
